Kirksville Regional Airport Notice Boost In-Flight Performance

Recent data indicates that Kirksville Regional Airport/Courtney Airport in conjunction with Contour Airlines is greatly decreasing flight cancellations and flight delays.

The early first quarter, January to March 2023, showed 65% of flights arriving on time and a general performance completion rate of 84%; however, these figures substantially improved in the next two months. In the period from April to May, on-time arrivals mounted to 75%, while the completion rate was especially pushed up to 96%.

According to the airport’s director, Jeff LaFountain, this is an emerging trend mainly because of what Contour Airlines is doing. Challenges still exist at the airport, particularly on delays, which are about 21%.

LaFountain explained that a significant contributor to delays was the high number of processed bags that had kept agents with the Transportation Security Administration overworking. The current baggage screening area is generally undersized and outdated, too small to allow smooth processing.

But help is on the horizon. The airport is developing plans for a new terminal, which will mitigate most of these problems. LaFountain expects that better facilities will drastically reduce processing time and, therefore, flight delays.

Work has already begun on the project, said Zahir, as the new terminal’s bidding process is now complete. According to Zahir, this accommodation raises the city one step closer to a groundbreaking on construction. Though a start date has not been nailed down, as final details are yet to be hammered out in the project, LaFountain estimates once construction begins, completion of the project could take anywhere from 12 to 18 months.

The new terminal is a step forward for Kirksville Regional Airport, offering improved efficiency and higher service levels to travelers in the not-too-distant future.
