Charlotte Airport Construction Will Temporarily Close Some American Airlines Ticket Counters

On July 9-21, there will be major changes at the ticket counter operations with American Airlines at Charlotte Douglas International Airport as the airport gears up for its busiest summer on record and ongoing terminal lobby expansion.

Indeed, American Airlines—which makes up a stunning 90 percent of the total daily flights in CLT—will be relocating/closing a few of its ticket counters during this process. Numbering eight to twelve altogether, those affected counters are located between Checkpoints C-E.

In the interest of better serving passengers, four ticket counters and four kiosks will be relocated outdoors to door two on the departure level. The hours of operation for both the indoor and outdoor ticket counters are the same, running from 4:15 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The airport is attempting to minimize that disruption by adding signage and bringing in more staff from the airport and American Airlines to assist in guiding passengers through the process in the lobby area and curbside. Priority check-in services will be near the Air Canada ticket counter area.

With the expected congestion, Charlotte Douglas International Airport officials ask passengers flying American Airlines during that period to arrive well ahead of their flights. In fact, the recommended arrival time is two and a half hours in advance of domestic flights and three and a half hours in advance of international ones.

These changes come as summer travel is surging. From July 2 to July 7, CLT totals around 925,000 passengers came through its terminals for the Fourth of July holiday—a 7% increase over the same week in 2023. Above 153,000 were local passengers flying out of Charlotte, which marks a 6% increase over the prior year.

These are temporary adjustments as part of the project to expand the terminal lobby, specifically the new ticket counters; this will increase capacity at the airport and enhance the overall passenger experience in the long term.
